Looking for something to do that’s thought-provoking and (perhaps even better) free? In the creative writing world, Warren Wilson’s MFA program has earned a stellar reputation. This week, you’ve a chance to hear why. Graduating students and faculty will be giving fiction and poetry readings and they’re open to the public.
From Friday, Jan. 9, to Sunday, Jan. 11, catch student readings each night at 8:15 p.m. There’s an additional reading Monday at 4:30 p.m. They’re about an hour long (and, as previously mentioned, free). Sample topics? “Archimedes’ Problem and Three Solutions” and “An Anxiety of Influence for Girls.” Handouts provided.
A couple shows we wanted you to know about: Bluegrass sensations the Infamous Stringdusters sweep into the Grey Eagle on Friday.
And folk/blues/roots/country artist David Bromberg (who learned from the Rev. Gary Davis in Greenwich Village in the ‘60s) will be at the Orange Peel next Thursday, Jan. 15. Bromberg’s collaborated with artists from Bob Dylan to the Grateful Dead, and has played on recordings from Link Wray to Willie Nelson. He’s a stringed-instrument virtuoso and now runs his own custom violin shop in Delaware.
In other local music news, multicultural pop faves Jar-e have teamed up with world-beat jam faves Toubab Krewe. Jar-e will open for the Eastern leg of the Krewe’s Spring tour. Jar-e frontman/multi-instrumentalist/big personality Jon Reid says after that, the band will come to town and release a new, hot-off-the-mixer record—to great fanfare, no doubt.
And in tuber news, reigning Sweet Potato Queen Jill Conner Browne will be at Malaprop’s on Thursday, Jan. 15. We could all use a laugh, eh? If you think turning 50 is funny, or wearing green sparkly dresses, majorette boots and red wigs is a hoot, check out this New York Times-bestselling humorist.
