Golden Blade III: The revenge!

Asheville moviegoers will get another shot at seeing the local kung-fu spoof flick Golden Blade III: Return of the Monkey’s Uncle Thursday, Jan. 24, at 7 and 10 p.m. at the Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company. The movie, from filmmaker T.J. Wiedow, was the favorite local movie of Xpress readers in last year’s Best of WNC poll.

It also played at the Asheville Film Festival, and Xpress‘s own Ken Hanke put it on his “must see” list. The movie harkens back to the age of “classic” kung-fu movies, with a magic sword, ridiculous eyebrows, a market-destroying fight scene and out-of-synch voice dubbing (there’s cyborgs and monkeys too).

Wiedow told Xpress that the showing was timed to coincide with the Sundance festival, where Asheville: The Movie, retitled Anywhere, U.S.A. is playing this year.

“We thought it was a good time, while everything was going on in Utah, to show an official non-selection of Sundance,” he said, noting that Asheville hasn’t gotten to see Anywhere, U.S.A. yet, as Sundance is getting the exclusive debut.

“We think it’s more appropriate to show a movie made in Asheville here first.”

Wiedow and members of the cast will be at the showing, and they’ll be selling DVDs of the movie too.
