This weekend, mix it up a little. Have some ice cream (free) and crafts (free) with your music (free, cheap, under $5). There’s a little something for everything in this round up, from fiction readings and Civil War reenactments to modern dance and indie-pop (check out Shod My Feet, pictured, on Saturday).

Friday, June 5
• Kick off the weekend early (say, 2-4 p.m.) with poetry and picking on the front porch of the Thomas Wolfe Memorial. The Buddy Davis Band plays: “Bring a chair, pack a lunch and join in the fun.” Free.

• For what it’s worth, Asheville experimental group The Falconeers list a show at a West Asheville Community party. Here are the deets: “Bomberoo West Asheville Gig- 5th Street Michigin West Asheville community party 4pm to 2am bring a blanket and party huge grassy yard and are booking acts to play.”

• The June Art Walk in downtown Asheville runs from 5-8 p.m., with new exhibits at American Folk Art & Framing, Gallery Minerva, Woolworth Walk and others.

• Asheville Green Drinks group meets for socializing, cocktails and a presentation on “Anti-Drought Solutions” with Sherry Ingram, professional geologist. BoBo Gallery (22 Lexington Ave., Asheville), 6:30 p.m.

• Author Elizabeth Cunningham reads from her new novel Bright Dark Madonna (in her trilogy about Mary Magdalene). Malaprops (55 Haywood St., Asheville, 254-6734). 7 p.m., free.

• One-woman show One Tough Cookie performs at Firestorm Cafe. 8 p.m., free.

• Funk-soul-hip-hop act Jaystorm performs an acoustic set at Stir Fry Cafe (1829 Hendersonville Rd., Asheville, 505-4934). 8 p.m.

• Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre holds performances of The Physics of Happy Hour at 7:30 and 8:45 p.m. at at BeBe Theatre (20 Commerce St., Asheville, 254-2621). Shows are ticketed, but the 8:15 intermission (which includes a dance) held outside the theater is free.

• Party band The Sharkadelics performs a standing date at The Hangar. 9:45 p.m., $5.

• Raleigh’s Airiel Down plays a startling mix of pretty prog rock and metal-tinged hard rock. Catch a free show at Wild Wing. 10 p.m.

Saturday, June 6
• The 12th Annual Black Mountain Arts and Crafts Show (demos, food and music, 65 booths of juried work) runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown Black Mountain. Free. (669-4814). Free.

• Here’s what’s up: Ice cream, clowns, balloon animals, face painting, and bluegrass group Me & The Boys. It’s all part of the free Ice Cream Social, held at the Flat Rock Village Hall (692-2929) from noon-4 p.m. Do a bring a chair; don’t bring a pet.

•  Confederate and Union armies reenact the “Skirmish at Warm Springs Encampment,” at the Hot Springs Resort & Spa (622-7676). 1 p.m., free.

• Juan Hollladay, front man of Secret B-Sides, performs solo at Howard St. Handmade Bonanza, an indie-craft fair (227 Haywood Rd., West Asheville, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.). Juan takes the stage at 2 p.m., free.

• Horseshoe Productions and Steep Winding Road turn Pritchard Park into a psychedelic free-for-all. The outdoor show starts at 6 p.m. and is, yep, free.

• New on the scene Shod My Feet (pictured) play jazzy indie-pop. Catch their 9 p.m. gig at Mike’s Sidepocket for a mere $2.

• Americana act The Honeycutters put in a 9 p.m. appearance at Westville Pub. $5 at the door.

• Worth seeing—don’t let the name put you off: Sophisticated Chimps— a talented, gorgeously-harmonizing trio—at Mo Daddy’s. 10 p.m. for a promised small cover.

• Better to dance to than to eat: Acid Casserole gets cooking late-night at Emerald Lounge. Forty Furies shares the bill. 10 p.m., $5.
