• Guitarist Mark Knight's name might not be a household name (yet) but he does have famous friends. Well, friends of friends. He'll be performing at the Lab with Matt Abts (who plays in Gov't Mule) on drums. Which pretty much gives Knight (below) the Warren Haynes stamp. 9:30 p.m., $10.



• Alt-country Brooklynites My Cousin, The Emperor (below) makes, according to press, "makes happily gnarly music." They'll release their single disc/double EP The Subway EPs on March 29 but have already headed out on tour with Caitlin Cary (Whiskeytown, Tres Chicas) and Matt Douglas (The Proclivities) A.K.A. The Small Ponds. Both bands play The Emerald Lounge.





Saturday, March 12

• Wilmington-based electro-jazz-fusion trio Sci Fi (below) is known for marathon performances. They'll share the stage (upstairs at Stella Blue) with Big Something (recently awarded the studio album of the year for Stories from the Middle of Nowhere by the Home Grown Music Network. 9 p.m., $8 advance/$10 day or show.





Sunday, March 13

• Two readings are scheduled for Malaprop's. First, it's local author Bill Branyon who will discuss his witty, heady book, Liberating Liberals: A Political Synthesis of: Nietzsche & Jesus, Vonnegut & Marx (Groucho, not Karl), Gandhi & Machiavelli. 3 p.m.



• Author, initiated Elder and African Shaman Malidoma Some follows, with a 5 p.m. event. His book is Of Water and the Spirit: Ritual, Magic and Initiation in the Life of an African Shaman; he will speak "about the importance of our relationships with the Ancestors and the natural world in our everyday lives. He will discuss how these relationships can enhance our ability to live our lives from our deepest truth and true purpose. A booksigning will follow the talk."
