Earlier today, Saturday, Jan. 8, six people were killed in Tucson, Arizona, and 12 injured. Among the dead, a 9-year-old child and a federal judge, John Roll; among the injured, U.S. Sen. Gabrielle Giffords, who is in critical condition after being shot in the head. Giffords — an outspoken opponent of Arizona's controversial immigration law — was meeting with constituents. A lone gunman, 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner, is in custody.
U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan of North Carolina issued this statement:
"Today's shooting in Arizona is an absolute tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her family and staff, and the families of those injured and killed," said Hagan.
