Ten-year-old Salee Allawe lost both legs to a U.S. air strike in Iraq in November of 2006.
Since July, she has received medical treatment and has been fitted for prosthetics at Shriners Hospital in Greenville, S.C. Allawe and her father Hussein Allawe were brought to the area by No More Victims, a nonprofit group that works to provide medical sponsorships for war-injured Iraqi children while advocating for peace.
The Western North Carolina Peace Coalition and First Congregational Church will welcome Allawe and her father to Asheville with a potluck dinner, followed by a presentation given by No More Victims' founder Cole Miller on Wednesday, Sept. 19. The dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. Following Miller's presentation, there will be an 8 p.m. prayer vigil at Pritchard Park.
The events are free of charge, but donations made to No More Victims will go toward the needs of the Allawe family as well as to other war-injured Iraqi children in need of medical care.
