The title of Amy Goodman's new book — Standing Up to Madness: Ordinary Heroes in Extraordinary Times — is not unexpectedly provocative. In publicity for the book, novelist and poet Alice Walker recognizes that provocation by praising the two Goodmans (the co-author is Amy's brother, investigative journalist David Goodman) for finding "the fierce and fearless voices that must awaken us from sleep."
Goodman will bring her wake-up call to Asheville this Friday, May 23, when she speaks at a fundraiser for the nonprofit Mountain Area Information Network and its radio station, WPVM-LP (103.5 FM). The event takes place at A-B Tech's Ferguson Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Goodman's last appearance in Asheville was a sellout, according to MAIN director Wally Bowen, so the $10 tickets could be in short supply. Ticket information is available at MAIN or by calling 255-0182.
According to Bowen, Goodman's book is being made available at Malaprop's Bookstore prior to her appearance, and she plans to sign copies following her talk. Democracy Now! is broadcast locally on WPVM every Monday through Friday at 8 a.m., noon and 6 p.m., with live Web-streaming available. MAIN and WPVM are also bringing the video version of the show to URTV (Public Access Channel 20) this summer.
