Asheville City Council is heading into the budget-writing homestretch.
A final spending plan is required by law to be adopted by the end of this month before the new fiscal year begins July 1, and the city's budget will be the predominant topic of discussion for Council's monthly, informal work session slated for Tuesday, June 17. Among the specific items to be discussed include funding for gang initiatives, transit expenditure and revenue outlooks, and staffing trends.
In addition, Council will narrow down a list of interviewees for a slew of city boards and commissions. Further, members will consider a resolution to accept a donation by Progress Energy of four acres of property along Riverside Drive between the railroad tracks on the east and the French Broad River on the west, running under the RiverLink Bridge.
That land, now designated for park or recreational purposes, once was the site of a gas-manufacturing plant that required extensive environmental remediation in 2004 and 2005.
