With three downtown exceptions -- two in Asheville and one in Hendersonville -- window service at area post offices will be unavailable on Saturday, July 5. This is in addition to the normal holiday closing on July 4, when all post offices are closed and there is no mail delivery.

On Saturday, stamp and package assistance, money orders and the like will only be available in Asheville at the Grace Station on Merrimon Avenue, at the West Asheville Station and at the downtown Hendersonville Post Office. Otherwise -- no need to knock in the smaller offices of the postal-service area known as the Mountain Mini Cluster, which encompasses facilities from Nebo to Murphy and is managed from the General Mail Facility on Brevard Road in Asheville.

Asked about the Saturday closing, small-town postmasters Rosemary Allen of Hot Springs and Mike Goforth of Weaverville agreed that it was "unusual." They said, however, that the nature of the Fourth of July weekend would probably mean little inconvenience for customers. "It's usually a big holiday for people," said Goforth.

All post offices are closed completely on Friday, July 4. There will still be mail delivery on Saturday, July 5.
