In separate transactions, two tracts of South Carolina’s well-known low country — totaling some 2,260 acres of land near the coast — are being set aside for conservation purposes.
As reported today by Wilmington, N.C.’s StarNewsOnline.com, the Nature Conservancy is buying 1,116 acres from International Paper Co. in Berkeley County — including wetlands with rare and endangered plants and located in the coastal flyway for migratory birds. The reported price tag is $6.5 million. Another 1,144 acres of land in Charleston County has been protected by a conservation easement granted by The Evening Post Publishing Co., prohibiting commercial development and allowing construction of no more than two houses there.
