Citing North Carolina’s 2005 law requiring landslide mapping in 19 WNC counties, the Golf Community Reviews blog has posted advice for potential mountain golf-resort homebuyers in a recent article, “Homeowners Could Lose by a Landslide.”
Blogger Larry Garvice says he researches golf communities and reviews golf courses as part of an advising business for baby boomers regarding their retirement lifestyles and locations. His ultimate advice regarding WNC? “The mountains of North Carolina are a wonderful place to live and play. But those contemplating a home there should probably ask their engineering inspectors if they have a degree in geology as well. Or find someone who does.”
The article gives a rundown of some of the WNC landslide destruction in recent years and talks specifically about Buncombe County and the “area developers who took advantage of a three-month window between passage of the slope regulations and its enactment.” He discusses The Cliffs at High Carolina, a development underway in Fairview, commenting, "Given The Cliffs history of development, it is not likely they will cram stack-o-shacks onto the land."
