The Buncombe County Planning Board will hold a special meeting on zoning Monday, March 30, in the wake of a recent court decision that overturned the county's zoning ordinance.
The meeting will be held at the commissioner's chambers at 30 Valley St. at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, March 30. It will begin the process, announced earlier this week by the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners, of putting zoning back in place.
The court ruling held that in their 2007 decision to approve countywide zoning, the commissioners had not given proper notice of the public hearing — or given the planning board enough time to review the zoning maps. The 2007 multifamily condominium ordinance — which restricts development at certain elevations — was also overturned on similar grounds.
The county has announced that it will probably take three to four months to bring zoning back. In the meantime, the commissioners are pursuing a moratorium on 14 "undesirable" property uses.
