At a meeting on Tuesday evening, a group of Haywood Road Market members gathered at the Bledsoe Building in West Asheville to discuss the future of the co-op in light of an eviction notice from the building’s owners.

According to co-op board President April DeLac, the discussion was well-rounded, with the participants’ numbers fluctuating throughout the meeting.

“We had a really good conversation,” DeLac said.

A vote by attending co-op members overwhelmingly favored declaring bankruptcy and closing the market, but DeLac says there weren’t enough people in the room to make the vote official. Under the co-op’s charter, a quorum of at least 50 people, or 10 percent of the 750 or so members, is required for a formal decision.

So, DeLac says, the co-op’s six board members will convene this Saturday to vote on the matter. And though Tuesday’s turnout was not enough to make a final decision, DeLac said the outcome of that vote will play into the discussion by board members.

”The board will absolutely take this vote under advisement in its decision,” she told Xpress.
