Join hiker/author Peter J. Barr at 7 p.m. on May at the Leicester branch of the Buncombe County Public Library as he discusses his book Hiking North Carolina's Lookout Towers and talks about the hiking opportunities as well as the history and need to preserve Western North Carolina's fire lookout towers. His book features 26 lookout towers in WNC, detailing hiking routes, driving directions, historical information, views, maps and photos. A Q&A session and book signing will follow his presentation.
Peter Barr is the director of the N.C. chapter of the Forest Fire Lookout Association, an organization actively working for the preservation of WNC's former sentinels of the forests. Also an accomplished hiker, he is a Smokies 900 Miler and one of only two people to have climbed all Southeastern mountain peaks above 5,000 ft. in elevation.
The Leicester branch is located at 1561 Alexander Road. For more info, call 250-6480.
And stay tuned: On May 22, hiker/author Danny Bernstein will have a book signing at Malaprop's in Asheville. Her new book is Hiking North Carolina's Blue Ridge Heritage.
