It's been quite an active week on the Mountain Xpress forums, and perhaps it should be of no surprise that local topics were among the most popular. The discussions of the filing deadline for local elections took on an added twist, as recently announced mayoral candidate Shad Marsh just happens to be a regular on the forum.
Another high-traffic local-news thread were the $346,000 embezzlement scandal at a local Bojangle's, the high-profile case of a Waynesville man calling the police on himself prior to robbing a bank and an ongoing discussion of the annexation efforts in Woodfin.
National topics also get their share of traffic. The recent proposed tax hike for the very wealthy is proving to be quite controversial, while the idea of therapy for violent Islamic extremists has provoked more confusion than anything else.
Last week, I presented a pair of forum-inspired music videos made by the forum regulars -- the MX Boarders -- and today I'm honored to be able to present yet another video from the same thread. Here's the Xpress Forums Click video for "ForumsMagic." (Some of the language is not work safe.)
Other interesting threads this week include: The Church of Larry The Cable Guy, An open letter to J.R. Martin, the First Annual Mountain X Boarders Convention and the failed bill introduced by N.C. state Rep. Pricey Harrison regarding the right to hang a clothesline.

To me it looks like Forums is a small club with about 7 people doing back and forth in a way I find boring, to be frank. There may be a few interesting threads started, but they quickly degenerate into silly off subject stuff. Reading Forums I have to ask, is it moderated?

Every single week a new, unregistered users complains that they find the forum boring. Every week. Like clockwork. I'm starting to wonder if maybe it isn't just one guy with a grudge. Maybe ... just maybe ...

So this is a free speech zone good. My honest opinion here is that the guy above, Hank, is right. Except I'd add that the forums is full of gossip, slander, inside joke put downs that are definitely childish in tone. Every few months or so I check the forums hoping it has improved. No way. Still a sandbox for kids with too much time on their hands.
