Ryan Croft, who placed seventh in the Asheville City Council primary last week, will appear on the general ballot in November, the Board of Elections reported today.
Croft takes the sixth place on the ballot due to the departure of incumbent candidate Kelly Miller last Friday. Miller left the race to care for wife Kate, who was diagnosed with cancer in June.
Buncombe Board of Elections Director Trena Parker told Xpress that Croft’s advancement came as a result of the timing of Miller’s announcement, which came before the Election Services Board met to canvass and certify the primary election totals. The primary election was held Oct. 6.
The board made that count today, and due to Miller’s departure last week, did not count votes for the Council member. That meant Croft was certified as the sixth highest vote getter in the race, Parker said.
“Timing certainly is everything,” she told Xpress.
On Monday, Croft participated in a City Council candidate forum in Kenilworth, invited there because the Board of Elections had not yet made an official decision on his advancement to the general election. Croft, a Republican, is seeking one of three seats up for grabs in the November election, which is a non-partisan race. The other candidates in the race are Cecil Bothwell, Gordon Smith, Esther Manheimer, J. Neal Jackson, and incumbent Council member Carl Mumpower. Incumbent Council member Robin Cape is also mounting a write-in bid for reelection. Mayor Terry Bellamy is seeking re-election against challenger Robert Edwards.

That's right. Who needs public works and a standard of living when you can have Starbucks and Urban Outfitters?
Why improve infrastructure unless it runs you straight to an urban village (or, you know, a strip mall that looks like a downtown)?

I hope he wins, this guy is crazier than a sack of coked up monkeys. Tho, considering his stance on "not talking to progressives" I wonder if he will bring ear plugs and a ball-gag to council meetings, and just sit there and foam at the mouth.
