Local artist Stephen Lange sent Xpress a note that a work in progress, a “2-foot by 6-foot diptych, brown stained wood towards the periphery with 8 red zigzag sunrays/lightning bolts in the center,” was taken from the area outside of his Wedge-building studio in the River Arts District. Lange asks that “If anyone sees this painting, please let the artist know. I'm on the second floor of the Wedge building.” See Lange’s full note, below:
"Whoever stole a six foot painting of a sunrise from in front of The Wedge Friday night during or shortly after the Asheville Movement Center’s Friday night dance, I would like to tell you that it will soon fall apart. It was unfinished. I put it outside to let it dry while I went to the pub to get a beer. Karma aside, don't you think someone is going to see it hanging (leaning as it doesn't have wire on it yet, either) in your place and ask you how much you bought it for? It is a rare composition for me, a slice of a circle set in a diptych that is 2 feet by 6 feet. The colors are brown stained wood towards the periphery with 8 red zigzag sunrays/lightning bolts in the center. It was also a commission for Bandido’s Burrito in West Asheville. I'd like to make a comment about Asheville in general and the River Arts District in particular, but I won't: Thieves are everywhere. When you steal something that is unfinished, be prepared for it to dissemble itself. If anyone sees this painting, please let the artist know. I'm on the second floor of the Wedge building."

There will be a reward for anyone that sees this piece and tells me who has it. Considering I've only done four of them out of 400 and two of them are owned by the same person, it should be easy to spot. Thank you Asheville and thank you Mountain Express.

Generally if people steal canvas they will paint over the existing artwork Or..strip it down to the frame and start over. I have seen a few do this.
If it is on wood they'll probably cut it up into smaller pieces to paint on.

That would be prefferable to someone displaying an unfinished painting. John Le from WLOS came by and did a piece to be aired tonight@6. Thank you mountain express
