At a ceremony last night in Chapel Hill, the North Carolina Press Association announced the winners of its annual News, Editorial and Photojournalism Contest, honoring Mountain Xpress with two awards in our community-newspapers division.

Xpress was awarded first place for Best Multimedia Project, for We are Burton Street: The Neighborhood’s Stand Against the DOT. The project, which documented the neighborhood’s history and current struggle against being displaced by the I-26 Connector, was a months-in-the-making collaboration between our staff, neighborhoods residents and a team of volunteer photographers and videographers.

• Our seven-part series, Worldwide WNC: Locals Going Global, was awarded third place for Best News Feature Writing. The series profiled dozens of local individuals, groups and companies that are making their mark on locales all around the world.

Other area publications who garnered awards from the NCPA include the Asheville Citizen-Times, the Hendersonville Times-News and the Smoky Mountain News. Click here to see all of this year’s awards.
