Today, I went down to the bear habitat as I do everyday to clean and check on our slumbering bears. Even though they are just beginning to stir as spring weather plays hide and seek with our beautiful city, Ursa (our female black bear) and Uno (the resident male black bear) were awake and active to greet me. What a nice sight on an overcast and cold day!
After such a cold and snowy winter, this is a sure sign of spring. Our bears took great advantage of the conditions this winter to stay dormant, tucked away in their cozy dens. I can not recall a time when the bears were so content to stay snuggled up and sleep for such a long period. Once Ursa and Uno settled themselves down in their den, rarely did they venture out to forage.
