The documentary, For the Love of Music, produced and directed by local filmmaker Mark Fields, makes a big-screen debut this Thursday, May 20, at the Fine Arts Theatre. Focusing on Asheville’s own Blue Ridge Orchestra, the film observes the 60-plus volunteer community devoted to symphonic production.
As the press release states, “You will be taken on a journey with the director as he follows the orchestra and its cast of characters through their rehearsals all the way to the concert, getting to know them as they prepare for their concert of the year, a breathtaking symphonic tribute to the late and great tenor Luciano Pavarotti.” For the Love of Music also focuses on the time, energy and dedication that “keeps this colorful small-town orchestra together year after year.”
Performing for Asheville’s Fourth of July celebrations and for school-aged children alike, the orchestra presents an array of material geared toward diverse local audiences. Established in 1999, amateur, semi-professional and professional musicians come together as volunteers, striving, as their mission statement reads, to make “orchestral music more accessible and affordable to the community.” Field’s film tells the story of people who come from differing faiths, backgrounds and lifestyles to share in a common interest and passion that unites them: music. All proceeds raised at the screening will benefit the orchestra.
