Known for their "slightly punk perspective on vintage American blues," the Santa Cruz-based trio The Devil Makes Three performs this Friday, June 11, at the Grey Eagle before heading to Manchester, Tenn., to play at the Bonnaroo Music Festival.
Blending elements of country, folk, bluegrass, ragtime and punk music, The Devil Make Three creates energetic and instrumentally-dynamic music that draws a listener from the first twangy cord. Frontman Pete Bernhard plays the slide and regular guitar and is gifted with a rich-yet-ragged voice that immediately distinguishes the band's overall sound. Performing on the stand-up bass is Lucia Turino, whose sweet, sultry vocals run through many of the songs, adding a touch of grace to the band's rough, road-worn and whiskey-tinged lyrics. Cooper McBean's bango riffs (he also plays the guitar, musical saw and sings backup vocals) functions as the band's percussive heartbeat, drenching their music with a southern-born sound. “The rhythm is what our band is about,” says Bernard on the band's Web site. “We write with rhythm and dancing in mind.” And the music certainly inspires dancing. The show begins at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.
