Indie phenoms Band of Horses already nabbed our own Tyler Ramsey and longtime Asheville musician and producer Bill Reynolds.

Now there's another Asheville connection. It starts with lo-fi songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist Seth Kauffman, whose current band Floating Action is an inventive local favorite. Kauffman used to be in a band called the Choosy Beggars with his best friend since age 5, Bryan Cates.

Cates had basically given up on music over the past seven years, but he's still been writing songs.

Now Kauffman tells Xpress that BOH frontman Ben Bridwell heard Cates' stuff, and loved it. Bridwell asked Cates to open a string of midwest dates, starting Monday, July 12.

Kauffman, former Grey Eagle co-owner Brian Landrum and Logan Matheny (of Roman Candle) will be Cates' backup band.

"Super excited about it," reports Kauffman.

In other Floating Action news, the band plays the Emerald Lounge on Friday, August 13. Kauffman's also been producing singer/songwriter/pianist Angi West's new album, which is a project we're super excited about.
