July’s Downtown After Five returns to Lexington Avenue at the I-240 overpass on Friday, July 16 from 5-9pm. The event lineup includes hometown sensation Josh Phillips Folk Festival with openers Soulgrass Rebellion.
Former singer and songwriter for Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band, Josh Phillips has broadened his musical horizons with the Josh Phillips Folk Festival. The band has been gaining a veritable army of fans that range from the youngest musical listeners, to seasoned music fans. The Folk Festival provides a strong testament to Phillips ability to capture generations worth of musical evolution, traverse years of cultural dilution and bring the listener back to the very source of roots, folk, soul, R&B, rock and reggae.
Asheville’s Soulgrass Rebellion combines roots, reggae, bluegrass and soul music and delivers it with a vengeance. Their high-energy live shows bring the audience and the music together and leave crowds wanting more.
DTA5 gives back to the community by partnering with local non-profits . The charitable organization staffs the wristband sales tents and splits the money with the Asheville Downtown Association which produces the event. July’s wristband recipient is LEAF in Schools in Streets.
LEAF in Schools & Streets (LSS) empowers youth through festive arts. LSS is a non-profit collaborative outreach program sending performing artists into local communities for hands-on workshops, residencies, mentoring and performances. The experience provides opportunity for the youth to attend Lake Eden Arts Festival and to perform alongside resident artists on a national stage, with their parents in the audience.
Other 2010 beneficiaries include YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign, Asheville on Bikes, Asheville Community Theatre and Moogseum.
Downtown After Five is committed to continuing reducing its carbon footprint. The concert series features biodegradable food and beverage containers, staffed compost and recycling stations, a solar-powered main stage and a complimentary bike corral. DTA5 has decreased its contribution to the landfill from more than 600 bags of trash in years past to just 13.
Downtown After Five is a production of the Asheville Downtown Association, a membership organization committed to being the voice of downtown. For more information, visit ashevilledowntown.org.
