Henderson commissioners withdraw funding for PIsgah Legal Services

The Henderson County Board of Commissioners voted Monday night to discontinue county funding for nonprofit Pisgah Legal Services at the request of Chairman Mike Edney.

PLS provides free civil legal aid to help low-income people — mainly in Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, Polk, Rutherford and Transylvania counties — avoid homelessness, escape domestic violence, access health care and meet other basic needs.

At the commissioners' meeting Monday, Edney, an attorney, said PLS “does provide some benefit to our community,” particularly in the area of domestic violence, but wanted to withdraw the $16,745 in county funding for 2011-12 partly because PLS sometimes “oversteps its bounds,” such as getting attorney's fees out of landlords. ...
