In honor of Asheville Regional Airport's 50th anniversary, local artists will grab their chalk and create a chalk mural on the airfield. Here's the press release:
In a continuing series of special events celebrating the Asheville Airport’s 50th anniversary, thirty local “chalk” artists will converge on the airport’s airfield near the runway on Thursday, June 30th to create what is quite possibly the world’s largest anniversary card.
Featuring artists and their art inside the airport is nothing new to the Asheville Airport, according to Tina Kinsey, director of Marketing & Public Relations. “We have showcased and sold artwork from over 120 local artists in our mini-gallery which began in June of 2007,” commented Kinsey. “But this will be the first time we’ve featured art outside. We’re not positive (yet) that it’s the world’s largest anniversary card, but it will certainly hold the record for being the most creative one!”
The event, inspired by Hendersonville’s “Chalk It Up!” chalk-art festival, will feature a 20 x 10 foot chalk drawing honoring the Airport’s anniversary as well as icons and amenities enjoyed by locals and tourists who visit the Western North Carolina area.
To comply with Airport security, artists will sketch the themed drawing in groups of 10, for one hour shifts, until the piece is completed. Beginning at sunrise, the entire event will be filmed. Then a time lapse video will be produced and shown on area websites offering viewers a chance to win gift certificates for free airfare. Contest details can be found on the Airport’s website and Facebook page.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to present this special gift to the Airport,” says Barbara Hughes, creator and producer of annual event. “It’s a great way to gain greater awareness of our ‘Chalk It Up!’ festival, which will be celebrating its 15th year this July.” That event will take place on July 16th on the sidewalks of Main Street in downtown Hendersonville.
