UNC Asheville Offers New Masters-Level Course Series on “Climate Change and Society”; Scholarships are Available

This fall, UNC Asheville begins a new series of courses on “Climate Change and Society” as part of its Master of Liberal Arts (MLA) program.

This special four-course concentration is designed to bridge the gap between climate scientists and government, business and community organizations whose decisions and work may be impacted by climate change. The courses will be of particular interest for working professionals in the fields of urban and regional planning, insurance, resource management, journalism and communications.

“Understanding and planning for climate change is vitally important,” said Gerard Voos, associate director of UNC Asheville’s Master of Liberal Arts program. “These courses should be invaluable to those involved in policy and business decisions, and people who want to successfully communicate about how climate impacts those decisions.”

The first course in the series, “Fundamentals of Climate Change Science,” is offered 6-8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from Aug. 25 to Dec. 8. The series will continue in the spring and subsequent semesters, and will feature “Tools for Climate Change Information and Decision-Making,” “Decision Modeling and Statistics” and “Communicating Science.”

The new “Climate Change and Society” courses complement the other environmentally based classes offered in the MLA program. Partial scholarships are available to degree-seeking MLA students who intend to complete all four courses in the “Climate Change and Society” concentration.
