U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland will be the featured speaker at the N.C. Democratic Party's fundraising gala, the Vance-Aycock Dinner, scheduled for Oct. 9 in Asheville.
The event, which will take place at the Grove Park Inn, marks the 50th and last Vance-Aycock gathering under its current name. A decision was reached to retire the "Aycock" portion of the name, originally honoring Democratic Gov. Charles Brantley Aycock (1901-1905). Aycock's activities in white-supremacy campaigns in the late 1800s brought about the decision to rename the dinner for 2011.
According to an "Under the Dome" report in The News & Observer of Raleigh, Hoyer — a one-time rival of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — is credited with helping to unite Democrats on Capitol Hill but is now struggling to keep his Maryland seat in the upcoming election.
