First state redistricting maps drawing sharp reviews

A report today in The News & Observer of Raleigh analyses the first newly drawn districts in what is likely to be a contentious redistricting process for the state. The so-called "majority-minority" districts include 24 House and 10 Senate districts with majority-black voting age. A public hearing on the districts is scheduled for tonight by teleconference (details available on the N.C. General Assembly website: www.ncga.state.nc.us).

A Republican plan that could put more African-Americans in the N.C. General Assembly also could spark another round of court fights over the role of race in drawing voting districts.
