The Smith-McDowell House Museum will present a Civil War Era Memorabilia Exhibit this September. The exhibit will feature items from the museum’s collection as well as items on loan from local collectors. This exhibit is the first in a series of exhibits highlighting the War Era during the 150th Anniversary of the conflict.
The second owner of the House, William Wallace McDowell, served in Company E, First Regiment North Carolina Volunteers and rose to the rank of Major. His photograph in uniform is on display at the museum, as well as his saber and Colt Navy Revolver.
The Smith McDowell House Museum is operated by the Western North Carolina Historical Association and is located at 283 Victoria Rd. Asheville, N.C., on the A-B Tech Campus. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for full time students, $4 children ages 8 to 18 and children age 7 and under are free.
