TripAdvisor(R), the world's largest travel site, has awarded Wildwater Adventure Centers’ Nantahala Gorge Canopy Tour a 2011 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. TripAdvisor presents this award to properties that consistently receive excellent ratings from its members. To qualify, attractions must maintain an average rating of 4 or higher out of a possible 5, as reviewed by real travelers on TripAdvisor. Additional criteria include volume of reviews and how recently they have been submitted by TripAdvisor travelers.
Wildwater’s Nantahala Gorge Canopy Tour, about an hour-and-a-half from Asheville, features 11 zip line sections and six sky and transfer bridges, available for ages 10 and older, from 70 to 250 lbs. Guests zip through multiple ecosystems, hardwoods, hemlocks, and a deciduous forest packed with native plants such as mountain laurel, dogwood, rhododendron, giant Fraser magnolia, umbrella magnolia, silver bells and more. Canopy rangers are well educated in regional history, culture and the plant-life visitors encounter while on their adventures, making the experience educational as well as fun (and less intimidating for first-timers).
The canopy tour is one of many outdoor attractions offered by Wildwater Adventure Centers, the first outfitter in the Southeast, established in 1971. Wildwater is a third-generation, family-owned and family-friendly business. In addition to zip lines, Wildwater’s Nantahala Gorge Adventure Center offers the first and only yurt accommodations in the Southeast – a vacation trend known as “glamping,” or “glamorous camping.” Yurt cabins allow you to camp with the comforts of home – each 16-foot diameter, circular structure is furnished with a queen-size bed and double-size futon, and amenities such as a coffeemaker, mini-refrigerator, ceiling fan and wraparound deck – but you still cook outside and share a bath house, just steps away. There’s also a group lodge that sleeps 44.
Other adventures at this location include a waterfall Jeep(R) tour along the back roads of the mountains; Wildwater’s signature Raft & Rail(C) excursion (a railroad tour through the mountains, lunch and a fully guided raft trip back down – a 23-year Wildwater tradition); and a Rails and Trails tour that combines a railroad excursion along the foothills of the Great Smokies and up the Nantahala River Gorge with the Waterfall Jeep(R) tour, with lunch included. Raft and inflatable kayak rentals are also available for more experienced whitewater enthusiasts who wish to enjoy the fun on their own.
Wildwater also offers adventures on the Pigeon River (just an hour from Asheville), on the Chattooga, in Upstate South Carolina, and on the Ocoee, in Tennessee. A zip line tour is currently under construction near downtown Asheville adjacent to the Crowne Plaza, scheduled to open later this summer.
