Hendersonville Times-News captures these alleged desperate moments in time in Deaverview Apartments last weekend:
An Asheville woman was charged with child abuse after a man who couldn't pay her for “services rendered” fled her apartment complex with her child, police said. ...
Gerri Rae Carpenter, 46, who lives in one of the apartments, told officers that an unknown man named “Phil” [later identified as Allan Keith Hiott, 45] whom she'd met for a blind date had driven off with her 3-year-old child, according to a news release.
How could this have happened? It is claimed that Gerri, while being chauffered in "Phil's" car later in the evening, stopped in back at her place to check on her older son. As he sat waiting in his car alone, the report goes, "Phil" determined he didn't have the cash to pay for Gerri services rendered and drove off, "forgetting that [Gerri's younger] child was in the back seat, police said. Realizing the child was still in the vehicle, [he] stopped and put the child out near the entrance to the apartment complex."
The “victim,” Carpenter, was charged with child abuse. Hiott was charged with first-degree kidnapping as well as larceny for the theft of $160 and 20 hydrocodone pills. A referral was also made to the Department of Social Services.
