From the high elevations to the low, from the sugar maples to goldenrod, fall colors abound this season. The U.S. Forest Service offers good ideas for the most colorful places to go see them.
High elevation (above 4,500 feet): Wayah Bald and Wine Spring Creek area in Macon County, Graveyard Fields in Haywood County.
Mid-elevation (2,500-4,500 feet): Chuncky Gal Mountains from Standing Indian to Shooting Creek along US 64 in Macon and Clay Counties
Low-elevation (below 2,500 feet): along NC 181 and the other forest roads in the Steels Creek and the Linville Gorge Wilderness areas in Burke and Caldwell Counties.
