From the press release:
SYLVA, N.C. – The 13th Annual Smoky Streak race event is being held Oct. 1 in Sylva to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for mammograms for underserved women.

The Smoky Streak, which consists of a 5-kilometer run, a 10-kilometer run and a 5-kilometer walk, raises money for mammograms for qualifying women in Jackson and Swain counties who otherwise would not be able to afford them.

The Smoky Streak course follows the Tuckasegee River in Sylva and will start and finish at the Webster Baptist Church, 1955 Webster Road, eliminating the previous need for shuttle buses.

Part of MedWest Health System’s month-long Fall Fight breast cancer awareness campaign, the Smoky Streak is being presented by MedWest-Harris and MedWest-Swain hospitals, the Foundation of MedWest-Harris and MedWest-Swain, and the Jackson County Health Department.

“The Smoky Streak allows us to provide women who might fall through the cracks with breast cancer screenings they need,” said Steve Brown, executive director of the MedWest Foundations.

One of every eight American women is diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in her life, and mammograms help provide early detection of the disease, giving a woman her best chance for survival. Cancers detected in early stages have a 98-percent cure rate.

Visit the Fall Fight section of www.medwesthealth.org to register for and learn more about the Smoky Streak and other MedWest Health System breast cancer awareness events, including the Power of Pink race event Oct. 29 at MedWest-Haywood.
