Expression is the heart of the Urban Art Institute, executive director Michael Hayes told Mountain Xpress in August.
UAI occasionally creates videos about its programs. Here's their latest:
Founded in 2007, UAI provides a safe environment for Asheville’s inner city youth. It currently serves 187 members ranging in age from 3-25. Members meet after school at the W.C. Reid Center, a community facility for the Livingston Heights neighborhood.
“We want to give people opportunities to express themselves artistically without barriers, borders or people telling them how to think,” Hayes says. “I’ve come to find out that if we listen to young people’s problems, we can address them.”

Here's what UAI says about itself:
The Urban Arts Institute is a program of Arts 2 People, a 501 (c) (3) organization based in Asheville North Carolina. Arts 2 People has a 10 year history in the Asheville community of :
great cultural programs;
outreach which uses the healing power of the arts to empower those in need;
arts education;
public art;
and supporting the businesses and economic development of local creative professionals.
Arts 2 People is excited to support and promote the Urban Arts Institute, as it is a program that is building bridges within the community while giving young people the opportunity to experience for themselves the greatness within. UAI and Arts 2 People are working to provide meaningful cultural experiences that knit the community together through art, creativity, and the joy of self expression."
