Both mountains are now accepting applications for the 2011/12 winter season as they staff up for anticipated November openings.
Approximately 800 people work during the winter season at Sugar and Beech mountains: Sugar, 500; Beech, 300. According to the Boone office of N.C. Employment Security Commission, traditionally, unemployment in Avery and Watauga counties is lowest during the winter and summer months with unemployment spiking during March, April, May, mid-October and November in both counties.
