WCU football player’s family files wrongful death lawsuit against university

The Sylva Herald reports:
A wrongful death complaint filed in January, now in mediation, claims Western Carolina University and some of its football coaches were negligent in the 2009 death of football player Ja’Quayvin Smalls.

Smalls, son of Henry and LaSonia Smalls, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., played for Wando High School, and went on to play for Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, Ga, where he was second on the team in tackles.

He was 20 years old when he arrived in Cullowhee on July 6, 2009. Smalls, a defensive back, was at WCU on a football scholarship. He was cleared to participate in summer weight lifting and conditioning drills July 7, with “no limitations” by WCU physician Dr. Jeff Davis. A day later, he passed away during practice.
