Recent deaths at WNC waterfalls prompts safety tips and cautions

At least three people have died and several others have been injured this year at Western North Carolina waterfalls, leading emergency responders to issue a word of caution to those venturing out to view fall leaves or enjoy the last of the warm weather.

August was a particularly busy month for emergency personnel. One man was killed and another injured in separate accidents in Brevard between Williamson Creek and Glenn Cannon Drive on Aug. 29, and a 13-year-old boy was taken to the hospital Aug. 7 after falling off Looking Glass falls in Brevard. . .

“The tops of waterfalls are the worst place to view a waterfall,” Henderson County Emergency Management Coordinator Rocky Hyder said. “No one is experienced enough to cross the upper levels of a waterfall. We encourage people not to do that.”
