Whether their tennis shoes lit up or just stayed tied, about 200 people ranging in age from 5 to 77 participated in the Heartbeat 5K race Sept. 25 at UNC Asheville. The course sprawled across the university's campus. Starting at the track behind the Sherrill Center, participants ran and walked their way through the Asheville Botanical Gardens, up Campus Drive and back to the track for two final laps. Some people ran in groups with friends, while others pushed their children in strollers. A few dogs joined their owners for the event as well, including a dachshund. The free inter-generational run was the first event for Active Aging Week in Buncombe County.
