Occupy Asheville group plans to continue demonstrating for the 99 percent of America

A group opposing corporate greed and social inequality has set up camp in downtown Asheville and plan daily demonstrations to raise public awareness.

Participants in Occupy Asheville, a movement held in solidarity with the ongoing Occupy Wall Street protest under way in New York, said Sunday the local effort could last days — or longer. ...

The local effort kicked off last Tuesday with the creation of a Facebook page, and organizers met for the first time Wednesday. The Facebook page by Sunday had grown to more than 1,800 fans.

After a rally at Pritchard Park on Saturday night, participants originally planned to camp at Pack Square Park but were dissuaded by police, who told them city policy prohibits use of parks after 10 p.m. With cooperation from police, a group of about 35 people instead camped under an awning outside the city’s parking services offices on Wall Street. ...Read the full article
