Even though the old building is slowly disappearing, the memories of living and working there remain.
The McDowell County Public Library, in association with the Mountain Gateway Museum and Eljapa Media Group, is hosting a special exhibit about the history of Marion Manufacturing Co. Titled “Woven Together: Marion Manufacturing and McDowell County,” the exhibit opened on Saturday in the downstairs meeting room at the library in Marion. It focuses on the textile mill on Baldwin Avenue and the East Marion community that was formed around it. ...
The exhibit is especially timely for two reasons. Sunday marked the 82nd anniversary of what has been called “the Marion Massacre.” In the early morning hours of Oct. 2, 1929, striking workers who had walked out and other employees picketing outside Marion Manufacturing soon found themselves in a deadly conflict with the local sheriff, six of his deputies and seven anti-union employees who were deputized on the spot.Read the full article
