“Nothing focuses a mind’s attention like a hangman’s noose,” Bowen said recently, paraphrasing famous writer and poet Samuel Johnson.
Bowen’s noose is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. ... It took surgeries and follow-up tests to determine that he, in fact, had the same disease that affected beloved baseball player Lou Gehrig, physicist Stephen Hawking and many others.
“There’s really no cure on the horizon, but there may be some strategies to slow things down,” said Bowen. “My goal is to stay connected to my juice and disconnected from the stress.”
