UNC Asheville’s North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement will hold an advance care planning workshop featuring area experts in the medical, legal and ethical issues presented by end-of-life health care decisions. The workshop, from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11 at UNC Asheville’s Reuter Center, is free and open to the public.
Discussion will include: communicating treatment wishes to loved ones and medical personnel, ethical and legal issues, the uses of advance directives, and more. Panelists will be:
* Dr. Darilyn Dealy, a physician with CarePartners Palliative Care Consultative Services.
* Dr. David Mouw, retired faculty physician at MAHEC.
* Mary Caldwell, clinical ethics coordinator, Mission Health System.
* Anna Osborne, staff attorney, Mission Health System.
The workshop will include an ample question and answer period, and individualized assistance for those wishing to complete a legally valid advance directive, including required notarization, using the Five Wishes format.
