A new strain of a popular gala variety called "twin bee gala" appears to fit the bill, as visitors at the N.C. Apple Festival last month ranked it as the best new apple variety.
On the Saturday of the festival, nearly 900 people provided feedback after trying six new varieties during the annual taste test conducted by the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service. The twin bee was the hands-down winner, garnering the most votes for best-tasting (30 percent), best texture (23 percent) and, overwhelmingly, best-looking (48 percent) with its bright-red skin.
"Bigger and redder has always sold better for me," grower Kenny Barnwell said, "regardless of taste."
