At the regular meeting of the Democratic Women of McDowell County Auxiliary Club on Oct. 3, 2011, Janice Poteat Hensley was elected as the new Chairperson of the group. Mrs. Hensley is a long term community political activist. Mrs. Hensley’s stated goal for the club is to recruit good Democratic Candidates for the local, state, and national elections and to get them elected. Mrs. Hensley lives with her husband Leonard D. Hensley in Old Fort. She is the current Chairperson of the Crooked Creek Precinct for the Democratic Party. She is a member of Addie’s Chapel United Methodist Church. She is a native of McDowell County, daughter of Grace Poteat and, the late David Poteat. She is a graduate of Pleasant Gardens High School, Western Piedmont Community College, Mars Hill College, and Western Carolina University. She is a retired Licensed Clinical Social Worker who worked in human services and mental health services during her career. Mrs. Hensley is proud to be on the side of the Democrat Party who gave us Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the Civil Rights Act, Unemployment Compensation, the Worker Compensation Act, the GI Bill, 40 hour work week, Minimum wage,Child Labor Laws, the Fair Pay Act, affordable Healthcare Reform Act, Medical Leave, and the School Lunch Program.
