EPA demands $6.5 million for "costs incurred to date" at contaminated CTS site

An excerpt from the letter, which was attached to a 425-page report sent to the Elkhart, Ind.-based CTS Corporation and the Asheville-based Mills Gap Road Associates:

With this letter, EPA demands that your company reimburse EPA for its costs incurred to date, and encourages your company to voluntarily negotiate settlement agreements ... In accordance with Section 104 of CERCLA, 42 U.S.C. § 9604, EPA has already taken certain response actions and incurred certain costs in response to the conditions at the Site.

EPA is seeking to recover from your company and other[s] at the Site its response costs and all interest authorized to be recovered under Section 107(a) of CERCLA. To date, the approximate total unreimbursed response costs identified through August 8, 2011, for the Site are $6,501,963.27. Under Section 107(a) of CERCLA, 42 U.S.C. § 9607(a), EPA hereby makes a demand for payment from your company and other[s] for the above amount plus all interest authorized to be recovered under Section 107(a) of CERCLA. A summary of these costs is enclosed.
