President Barack Obama paid a surprise visit to Marion on Monday, where he ordered lunch from Countryside Barbeque and had his photo made with lots of excited patrons. ...
At around 11:15 a.m., hungry customers were rapidly filling up Countryside Barbeque on Rutherford Road. The U.S. Secret Service showed up, too. They got something to eat and quietly informed the restaurant’s owner, Rob Noyes, that the president of the United States would arrive in next 20 or so minutes. Noyes said he was briefed by the Secret Service about security measures for the visit, but there was little advanced warning.
“We had no idea,” said Noyes.
The surprised patrons were also informed about the upcoming visit. The Secret Service agents used a metal detector wand to make sure that no one was carrying any weapons. A customer said later that all knives had to be put away. ...
“He came in and shook everybody’s hand,” said [long-time employee Katherine] Cable, adding she was very surprised with how this day turned out. ...
