A coalition of 45 churches, community-based-organizations, businesses and nonprofits including WNCAP (Western North Carolina Aids Project) will hold an AIDS Awareness Walk on Saturday, Nov. 5 in Asheville. Walkers will gather at The Grove House Complex at 11 Grove Street at 11 a.m., then move uptown to rally at Pack Square. County Commissioner David Gantt, local writer and poet Dennis Tillman, and longtime HIV/AIDS activist Michael Harney are slated to speak. The purpose of this event is to bring awareness to current HIV/AIDS issues and show support for those living with HIV/AIDS. ...
Last month during WNCAP's Raise Your Hand event, $85,000 in donations was raised to help fund HIV/AIDS prevention and care in WNC, including supportive services for more than 400 WNCAP clients who are living with HIV/AIDS. ...
Also, the previously announced screening of the film Life, Above All has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 16. This award winning film lauded by critics at the Cannes Film Festival tells a story of courage in the face of AIDS and stigma in contemporary South Africa. This event is made possible from the support of Bob and Carol Deutsch and the Fine Arts Theatre. Tickets are $10 or pay-what-you-can and will be available at the door. ...
