Local food all winter? Sure, with Winter Sun Farms' frozen-food CSA

Enka-based Blue Ridge Food Ventures is busy preparing for its third year of Winter Sun Farms, a community supported agriculture program offering shares of produce from local farmers — including a handful from Henderson and Polk counties — throughout the winter.

Once a month from December through March, Winter Sun Farms subscribers pick up a box holding eight packages of frozen fruit and vegetables grown at local farms and prepared at Blue Ridge Food Ventures, an 11,000-square-foot, shared-use kitchen incubator and natural products manufacturing facility.

"Everything is pretty much taken care of for you," said Chris Reedy, farm outreach program manager at BRFV. "You can literally open a bag and have a home-cooked meal with local, primarily organic, ingredients in less than 15 minutes. It's a cheater's way to local." ...Read the full article
