At a public meeting held by a state legislative committee on Oct. 20 in Fletcher, critics of Mission Health System's expansion plans released a recording in which the company's PR executive Janet Moore, in comments to a professional group, said that Mission does have a monopoly in the area and is the "500-pound gorilla" in the room. Today, Oct. 21, Mission announced that Moore has resigned and that her views "in no way represent the beliefs of Mission’s Board, Leadership, employees or physicians." The full release:

“Janet Moore’s comments at a recent presentation to a professional audience were ill-advised, and she apologizes. Ms. Moore has tendered her resignation and it has been accepted. The views reflected in that presentation in no way represent the beliefs of Mission’s Board, Leadership, employees or physicians. Mission remains committed to serving the residents of Western North Carolina with humility and respect.”

    • Moore got caught in the cross-fire of battling healthcare corporations, according to the quotes in this Asheville Citizen-Times article
      http://www.citizen-times.com/article/2011111021031

Park Ridge [Hospital] posted Moore’s entire talk on Friday in response to allegations that her comments were taken out of context. ...

“I find those types of generalizations offensive,” said Mark Swanger, chairman of the Haywood County Board of Commissioners. “I think they are inaccurate and display a certain ignorance of our county and its people.”

Haywood County Tourism Authority Director Lynn Collins had a similar take.

“First of all I am disappointed and appalled that someone in her position would actually make those comments at a national marketing convention,” she said. “Especially considering the fact of how much business they get from the neighboring county. And the fact that it’s not a true picture of what Haywood has to offer.” ...

Moore criticized Park Ridge for putting the comments online and said the attack has become personal.

“I have to tell you, I’m someone with pretty high integrity, and this is extremely hurtful,” Moore said. “It was taken out of context.”

    • no additional statements will be made because everybody jun management is probably "getting a new one" after this ... and their a-holes are too sore to let anymore words slip out!

just Thursday John Boyle had an excellent article in the CT regarding Missions' attempt to get the state of NC to stop monitoring their operation as a monopoly!

"After 16 years working under the state-monitored Certificate of Public Advantage, Mission Health officials said Thursday the system’s debt has been paid and it should be released from the document."

    • Her condescending comments sure didn't go over well. The hospital's statement, though in corporatese, indicates she was fired. Mission handled her quickly but significant damage has been done. No further comments isn't the best strategy. How about a sincere apology from the CEO to the communities that Mission serves?
