Ben Blake spends his weeks teaching college students algebraic equations. But on Saturday this mathematics professor will navigate through raging rapids and off 20-foot waterfalls during one of the most extreme whitewater kayak races in the world.
Since 1996 the first Saturday in November has marked the Green River Narrows Race where paddlers from around the world join locals in Henderson County to compete in a dangerous half-mile sprint through class IV and V rapids. Class V rapids earn their rating for being hard and consequential, with the potential for injury and even death.
